Native Plants of Vancouver (Part II)
Beautiful Plants that are Native to Vancouver and British Columbia: Part II
Hello all! Welcome back to our blog. Fontana Landscaping is excited to provide homeowners and gardening extraordinaries alike with tips and tricks that are sure to help you cultivate the garden and home exterior of your dreams. While our local landscaping business primarily serves the Vancouver area, our blog can help with the landscaping needs of the rest of the world.
In our last post, we chatted about some of the plants that are native to Vancouver and that we recommend planting in your garden. Utilizing plants to construct a vibrant garden or landscape architecture is beneficial in that the plants thrive in their own environment and planting them is sustainable. Last week, our landscaping company discussed some of our favorite Vancouver based flowers and shrubs that both look great and require little maintenance. Today, we’re going to introduce some of our favorite native grasses and trees!
Grasses
While you might not realize it, there are many grass species that populate the Vancouver and Langley area. Our landscaping company is familiar with most, and we sure do have our favorites! Adding a mixture of grasses to your garden or landscape architecture can go a long way in making it greener and prettier.
- Creeping Spikerush: Creeping Spikerush is the grass commonly seen sprouting up around ponds and other bodies of water. Its bright green and tall leaves are topped with a spiky little flower, hence the name “Spikerush.” Our local landscaping company loves this grass because it adds a woodsy touch to ponds, real or artificial!
- American Bulrush: This type of grass is similar to the Creeping Spikerush in that it grows along bodies of water, but differs quite vastly for other reasons! This tall, pointy grass loves wet environments and serves as a primary food source for many wild fowl, including ducks! Quack!
- Large Headed Sedge: What a cool plant! The Large Headed Sedge is a grass native to the British Columbia, Pacific Northwest region. It’s long, bright green stems and spikey flower give the grass a strange but illustrious look. Our landscaping company is especially partial to this plant because of its look, but also because it’s so easy to grow!
Trees
What would Vancouver be if it weren’t for lush forestry and bright green leaves? Los Angeles? Thanks to the mild temperatures paired with partly cloudy skies and plenty of rain, the trees that grow naturally in our British Columbia paradise are anything but boring. Here are some of the most beautiful and leafy trees that our landscaping company absolutely loves.
- Douglas Maple: What’s more wonderful and majestic than the ancient maple? With hundreds of varieties of maple, this tree species has a way of making its mark on any area it grows within. The Douglas Maple is known for it’s bright green leaves and hot pink stem. Fontana Landscaping plays favorites with Douglas Maple for how the leaves look in Autumn!
- Pacific Flowering Dogwood: Every spring, the Vancouver area is brightened up after a long winter from the petals of the Pacific Flowering Dogwood. This smaller tree blossoms with its famous flowers once a year, and continues to provide brightness with its green leaves long after the flowers fall. Dogwoods are lovely additions to gardens and home landscaping for their beauty and ability to thrive with little upkeep.
- Oregon Ash: The Oregon Ash is a lovely, leafy ash tree native to the Pacific northwest region. Our landscaping company loves it for it’s timeless aesthetic!
