Mum Care for Autumn
Mums Away: a Few Mum Care Tips and Tricks for the Fall
Hooray! It’s fall, one of the loveliest seasons around. We here at Fontana Ponds & Water Features welcome the change in season, cooler temperatures, and gorgeous aesthetic brought on by the changing leaves. Autumn in British Columbia isn’t something that can be matched, and we’re so excited that it’s finally here! While we’re sad to say farewell to the green trees and flowery gardens, we’ll settle for the fall colors and, of course, the mums! Mums are the flower of the season, and we absolutely love them! Today, we’re going to talk about mum care for the ultimate fall landscape design.
Choosing the Right Mums
Fall tends to get a bit chilly up here in Langley, and it’s best to choose the mums that you buy accordingly. This flower is slightly stronger and can withstand the cold as long as you choose the correct ones. There are two types: hardy and florist mums. You’re going to want to choose the hardy ones if you plan on planting them! That way, if the temperatures get a bit cooler, they won’t die.
Planting Correctly
Like most flowers, it’s important to plant them strategically so as to promote optimal growth. Mums love the sunshine, so it’s best to put them in places where they could soak up the rays all day long. Additionally, these flowers work best in well-drained soil, so be sure to plant them in beds that are raised in case of rainy autumn days. The roots of mums are normally quite shallow, so it’s best to be cautious when planting them!
Care
Mums are fairly easy to tend to and they grow well in the fall months. Be sure to water them regularly, and even more so if you notice that they’re beginning to wilt or brown. When the signs for winter start showing, like the first frost, prepare your mums for the season by pinching off the dying petals and add mulch around the plants. Additionally, remove older branches and stems. When the warmer weather comes back, the new mums will sprout up and look beautiful! Add some fertilizer too, so that the spring plants are healthy and strong.
Choosing Colors and Types
There are a variety of colors and types of mums that all look amazing. Some mums that we commonly see are Blizzard, which is white, the Melissa, which is bright and colorful, and the Zesty Jean, which blooms in a pale orange color that looks beautiful among the fall foliage. Choosing the type of mum that you want in your garden is dependent on your preferences and the color scheme. There are so many flowers to choose from, and often picking the ones you like best is the hardest task!
